The Top 50 Dallas-Fort Worth minority- and women-owned businesses saw tremendous revenue gains in 2007 for the most part, with at least 15 businesses posting double-digit growth rates.
Last year's top-ranked firm, Snelling Staffing, dropped off the list because of a change in ownership. But two new firms, Pinnacle Technical Resources and Continental Cabinets, joined the Top 10.
Thos. S. Byrne Ltd. moved up from fourth to the top spot, with $215 million in revenue, a 39 percent increase. The general contractor was buoyed by industrywide gains in commercial building.
Encore Enterprises, at No. 2, recorded the biggest gain. The hotel and property management firm almost doubled its revenue from last year, to $214 million. The increase, according to Encore chairman Dr. Bharat Sangani, was due to a nationwide hike in hotel rates and returns on the company's real estate investment strategies.
Construction, food service, and IT staffing and consulting companies are prominently represented on this year's list, with most companies in these sectors also posting gains.
To be listed in the annual survey, a firm must have a majority owner who is a woman or a minority, or both, and be based in Dallas-Fort Worth. The companies are ranked by 2007 revenue.
The list is not comprehensive because some private firms decline to disclose their revenue. Major companies that did not participate this year include CG Management (No. 2 last year) and Keys Fitness Products (No. 10).
